PRESEASON OUTLOOK:
The
KU Media Guide said, “Kansas’
82nd year of intercollegiate basketball may be one of the most
competitive in history.” Hopes
were high, because although losing three veterans, including All-American Paul
Mokeski and starter Wilmore Fowler, the Jayhawks returned eight letterman,
including three starters from the ’79 squad which finished 18-11 overall and
8-5 in the conference. Darnell
Valentine, KU’s leading scorer last season, was listed on almost every
pre-season All-American squad. The
highly touted recruiting class included Ricky Ross and Keith Douglas, both
McDonald’s All-Americans and Kelly Knight, a Scholastic Magazine All-American.
Head Coach Ted Owens said “Our improved depth is going to do two things
for us. First, it will enable us to
play at a faster tempo. Secondly,
it will create a very competitive situation in practice.
With the addition of Ross and Douglas, and the shooting potential we’ve
already seen in our returning players, I’m hopeful people won’t be able to
zone us.”

SEASON
SUMMARY:
Although
led by All-American junior guard Darnell Valentine, the 1979-80 team never
meshed, and fell to 15-14 overall. The
team was strong in the backcourt, with 6’2 Valentine, 6’6 soph Tony Guy,
6’5 junior Booty Neal, and Ricky Ross, a 6’6 freshman. The forward position was ably manned by 6’8 junior John
Crawford and 6’7 sophomore Dave Magley, who led the team in rebounds, but they
had little help in the frontcourt.
The
post was staffed by committee, with 6’9 senior Chester Giles, 6’10 junior
Art Housey, 6’10 soph Mark Snow, and freshman Kelly Knight, who collectively
scored 10.6 ppg and garnered less than five rebounds per game.
Nothing
ever seemed to spark this team. The
preseason brought a 6-5 record. Although KU beat Missouri to start the
conference season on a high note, they followed with three straight losses.
They finished rather strong, however, winning five of six before losing
to K-State 58-79 in the post-season conference tournament final.
The Hawks finished the conference in a fourth place tie with a 7-7
record. The KU faithful were
calling for the head of coach Ted Owens after his 16th season.
Valentine
ended the season as the team’s leading scorer with 463 points (16.5 ppg), and
led the team in assists and steals. Ricky Ross, a rising star who was the second
leading scorer on the team, had enough of Owens and transferred after the end of
the season.
HIGHLIGHTS:
KU defeated conference champ Missouri
twice, including the conference opener and an 80-71 romp in the Big 8
post-season tourney. After the
season, Valentine was a consensus All-American and made the US Olympic team,
which boycotted the Olympics.
