PRESEASON OUTLOOK:

Despite losing two All-American first round NBA draft choices, the Jayhawks look to have another stellar season, with four starters returning and a top recruiting class coming in.  They will have extremely tough competition in the Big 12, and I wouldn't be too surprised to see three conference teams in the NCAA Final Four, as Missouri and Texas are loaded.

KU's frontcourt will be led by 6'9 255 lb. junior power forward Wayne Simien, who sat out much of last year with a shoulder injury that was operated on during the off-season by the same surgeon who successfully repaired Chris Webber's shoulder, as well as some other top athletes.  Simien has been named by several pre-season mags as an All-American, and was selected All-Conference in the Big 12 coaches pre-season poll.  Joining him in the double post will be 6'9 275 lb. senior C/F Jeff Graves, who ably filled in for Simien last season. highly touted high school All-American David Padgett, a 6'11 235 lb. center, should push Graves for a starting position.  They will be backed up by experienced senior Bryant Nash, a 6'6 athletic guy who can play almost any position, 6'10 soph Moulaye Niang, and walk-ons Christian Moody and Brett Olson.

Leading the team will be 6'1 junior Aaron Miles, who led the conference in assists last year.  Joining him in the backcourt will be junior swingman Keith Langford, a 6'4 slasher.  It appears that Michael Lee, a 6'3 combo guard will be the fifth starter as the season begins, although don't be surprised if 6'5 superfrosh J. R. Giddens takes his place by midseason, with Lee assuming the sixth man role he played last year. Backing up Miles at point guard will be Lee, 5'11 soph Jeff Hawkins, and incoming freshman Jeremy Case.  Walk-ons Steven Vinson, a 6'2 sophomore and freshman Nick Bahe will likely see limited time, but both can light up the nets.

Barring injuries, the Hawks have what it takes to capture the league title and make a run for the national crown.  The non-conference schedule doesn't look as tough as usual, although they meet Michigan State in their third game of the season, with Oregon and Stanford later on.  I expect they will be 6-0 in the conference before meeting MU in Lawrence on Feb. 2.  Their only game with Texas will be in Austin, and the last game of the regular season will be in Columbia.

SEASON SUMMARY:
Bill Self's first regular-season at KU was a bit rougher than probably he had hoped, but a 20-7 record highlighted by two victories over Missouri, including one in the Hearnes Center finale, and non-conference wins over Michigan State and Oregon helped blunt the sting from losses to Stanford, Nevada, and Richmond.

The Jayhawks tied the Texas Longhorns for second in the Big 12 Conference with a 12-4 league record, but were the third seed in the conference tournament because Texas had the head-to-head tiebreaker. KU won its third meeting with Missouri in the conference quarterfinals, but again fell to Texas in the semifinals.

The loss to the Longhorns didn't keep the Jayhawks from getting a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament and a first-round game just down Interstate 70 in Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Mo., though. KU cruised through it's first game, a 78-53 blowout of Chicago-Illinois, and had just as little trouble in the second round, defeating Pacific, 78-63.

KU got a little help from Alabama-Birmingham in the second round when the Blazers defeated the Kentucky Wildcats, 76-75. Rather than face the No. 1-seeded Wildcats in the Sweet Sixteen, the Jayhawks took on the Blazers and trounced them, 100-74, in St. Louis. With a chance for a third straight Final Four appearance on the line, KU forced overtime with Georgia Tech in the Elite Eight, but eventually lost, 79-71.

Two weeks after losing to the Yellow Jackets, the Jayhawks lost freshman guard Omar Wilkes, who announced he would transfer after the spring semester. The same night, sophomore center Moulaye Niang announced he also would be leaving KU. Those departures were just the beginning. Five days later, associate head coach Norm Roberts accepted the head coaching job at St. John's, and two days after that freshman center David Padgett announced he would transfer after this school year.
