Braden River's Mike Egloff or Palmetto's Brian Smith arguably might have been the best basketball players in the Mustangs gym when the two teams tangled on Dec. 3.

Each had great games. Egloff scored 15 points to lead his team to a 65-61 triple overtime win over the Tigers. Smith had a game-high 18, including a pair of 3-point field goals.

But the best player in the gym was Palmetto coach Wilmore Fowler, a former Tiger star who played at the University of Kansas and finished his college career at the University of Georgia in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Fowler carries a few more pounds than he did during his playing days, but his shot probably is still pretty sweet. He had the game.

The Palmetto coach, known as "Mo" around the area, averaged nearly 10 points a game for Kansas during his sophomore year.

His backcourt mate was All-American Darnell Valentine.

Fowler was involved in a gaff by the late Curt Gowdy, who was announcing NCCA tournament games in the late 1970s.

Gowdy referred to Darnell Valentine as "Darrell" Valentine. And he referred to Wilmore Fowler as "Wilmer."

He was criticized nationally for the slipups.
