LOSSES FROM LAST YEAR ('41 stats):
PRESEASON OUTLOOK:
As uppredictable a team as Dr. F. C. Allen has ever faced a
season with, will take the court for the Jayhawks this winter.
Questions of physical wellbeing and men playing up to their
natural ability are very much in the picture. Two trick knees
may wreck the Jayhawks' chances this season. Ralph Miller's
famous knee held up during football, but will be put to much
greater strains on the court. Big things are expected of
him. To add to the uncertainty, Marvin Sollenberger, junior
guard, suffered a recurrence of an old high school knee injury
recently and he may be bothered by that all season.
Sollenberger, husk guard, is the only regular returning from
last year's Big Six co-champions.The Jayhawks should have
their usual polished ball handling team, and power on offense
should be plentiful. The defense, while not as reassuring,
has possibilities of developing fast.

SEASON SUMMARY:
As the Jayhawks finished the 1941-42 Big Six season 8-2 and
in a tie for first, Allen had clinched at least a share of his 25th
league title in 32 years of college coaching.
KU again met Oklahoma A&M for the fifth district NCAA final.
Ralph Miller led KU with 17 points as the Jayhawks won 32-28.
In the first round of the NCAA Western playoffs, KU lost to Colorado
46-44, despite Charlie B. Black’s 18 points.
In the consolation game, Black scored 16 as KU beat Rice 55-53.
Black was named to the NCAA Western tournament team, and he and Evans
were named All-Americans. Source:
The Crimson & Blue handbook, pages 38-39.In the NCAA tourney,
Colorado barely survived a grudge match with Kansas.
Frosty Cox, the Colorado coach, learned his basketball at Kansas
as a protege of Dr. F. C. "Phog" Allen. Allen had recently
begun firing off salvos at his former student for persuading
several Kansas boys - including four starters - to forsake the
great plains of their home state for the Rockies.
On the evening of March 6, 1942,
after an afternoon win over Missouri, more than 300 former players, friends
and family toasted Phog at a supper in the Memorial Union building,
commemorating his 25th anniversary as the KU coach. Phog was presented
a thick scrapbook loaded with letters of congratulations from throughout the
nation. The book opened "In 25 years there has never been a dull moment on
Mt. Oread during the winter season. Those 19 champion basketball teams
have brought countless thrills and chills to Kansas: 556 games won and only
127 lost. We announce in your honor a gift to the University of a permanent
scholarship fund for needy and worth students knows as the F. C. Allen
scholarship."
