Tuesday, January 25, 2005

Mike Masucci, a former Kansas University basketball player, died Saturday at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Overland Park. Masucci was 36.

A 6-foot-10 center from Kansas City, Mo., Grandview High, Masucci played in 24 games as a freshman during the 1987-88 season, averaging 2.1 points and 1.5 rebounds per game.  Masucci was suspended from the team by head coach Larry Brown one day before the NCAA Tournament began. Three weeks later, Kansas won the 1988 NCAA championship. Masucci transferred to Long Beach State the next year. He later played pro basketball in Asia, Portugal and Turkey.

Masucci is survived by his wife, Vanesa, and a son Robert, 3.
