H. Gordon Gray

Memorial services for H. Gordon Gray, 86, Mission, were held Dec. 23, 1997. He died Dec. 21.

Mr. Gray was the freshman basketball coach at KU under Forrest "Phog" Allen. He attended KU and participated in both the basketball and track from 1933 to 1935, lettering in both sports. A student of James Naismith, he was a starting guard for three years on a team coached by Allen. He was also the Big Six Conference pole-vaulting champion. As an undergraduate, he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Owl Society and served as President of the "K" Club.

While pursuing his graduate degree at KU, he was called to active duty during World War II and served as a major in the Army Air Corps. He returned to KU after the war to continue working on his graduate degree.

Mr. Gray is survived by his wife, Ruth E. Gray; a daughter, Diana Gray Ormsby, Overland Park; a son, Gary Gordon Gray, Anderson, S.C.; three brothers; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
