Former Jayhawk basketball player Larry Davenport died of a heart condition on August 3, 2007, at age 74.
Davenport was an instrumental part of the Kansas basketball team in the early 1950’s. Prior to attending KU, Davenport was a star on the Newton, Kansas high school team. As a freshman, he played in 22 games as a reserve on the 1952 national championship team.
During the 1953 season, he was the ‘sixth man’ on the Jayhawk team that lost to Indiana in the NCAA final game. He became a starter in the 1954 season, scoring 5.0 points per game. His senior year in 1955, he played in only 12 games, apparently injured the latter part of the season.
For his career, Davenport played in 80 games, averaged 3.7 ppg, and was part of three Big 7 conference championship teams.
