"By then, Pete had been at Kansas for two years and had developed into one of the school's first all-around athletes. He played tackle on the football team, pitched for the baseball team and was a forward on Naismith's basketball team. Frequently, Forrest made the trip to Lawrence to watch his brother play. There were no athletic scholarships then, and the Allens, living on their father's income as a produce salesman to grocery stores, couldn't afford the tuition. Pete Allen, a strapping 200 pounds, was given $300 on the sly by some Lawrence businessmen to attend Kansas." Pete Allen's KU career ended after two years, The businessmen who had bought his services didn't come through when Pete needed the money to repay some loans. Pete withdrew from school, played some minor-league baseball, became an assistant football coach at Central Missouri State, before finally settling into a long military career. " Phog, p. 5-6.
