Kerry Boagni , who was named to the Big Eight Conference's all-freshman team last season, has left the University of Kansas basketball team, apparently unhappy with being removed from the starting lineup.

The 6-foot-8-inch Boagni, who was averaging 8 points a game, started the first six games but then was benched by Coach Larry Brown . When Brown, the first-year coach, was asked if Boagni was unhappy with his playing time, he said: ''That's for him to say. All that I try to tell the kids is that they will play if they want to play the game unselfishly. That's the base we're trying to build here.'' Boagni could not be reached for comment.

Kerry Boagni, the sophmore forward who quit the Kansas Jayhawks' basketball team after having been demoted from his starting position by Coach Larry Brown, said it was not the loss of his position but Brown's style of coaching that had prompted his decision. ''He's a great coach and a great person,'' said Boagni. ''But we just didn't mix as player and coach.''
