KU inducts Waugh

Former player, coach and administrator Jerry Waugh was inducted into KU's athletic hall of fame at Saturday night's game. Waugh began a lifetime of involvement with the school when he played basketball under coach Phog Allen, who dubbed the Wellington native "The Sheriff of Sumner County" for his defense.

He served at his alma mater as an assistant basketball coach under Dick Harp, served as an assistant athletics director and, after more than a decade in private business, returned to coach women's golf, a position from which he retired last year. "The department has been very good to me," Waugh said. "I'm very grateful that I've had the opportunity to come and go and come and go.

"There are good people in other places, and there are good schools. I don't deny that. But the University of Kansas is a pretty special place."
