Releford makes official commitment to KU

The Kansas City Star

Travis Releford strolled into Bishop Miege’s gym on Thursday seemingly without a care in the world.

Decked out in shorts and a blue Kansas pullover warm-up shirt, he was calm, cool and ready to sign his letter of intent to play for the Jayhawks.

However, from the way he looked during his signing ceremony, you never would have guessed that the anticipation of this day had gotten to him. Releford admitted he was so excited he had trouble sleeping the night before.

“I went to sleep, (then) woke up,” said Releford. “I was doing that all night.”

Releford, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard/forward, gave an oral commitment to Kansas over the summer after a junior season in which he averaged 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game and led the Stags to a third-place finish at the 5A state tournament.

Releford, who was also being courted by North Carolina, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Kansas State, said picking Kansas was easy because of the school’s tradition.

“I weighed my options just to see who would recruit me, but from the beginning I just knew it was going to be KU,” he said.

Releford is the 70th-ranked player in the Class of 2008 by rivals.com. and the 16th-ranked shooting guard.
