"Doc Allen used to joke, 'You've got to fight fire with fire. If the other team has a Jewish player, you've got to get a Jewish player...if they've got a Polish player, we've got to get a Polish player... if Kansas State has a black player, we've got to get a black player.' So they went to Wichita and got La Vannes Squires to play at Kansas. He was the first black to play at Kansas. He was a wonderful guy. He went on to become president of a bank in Wichita and may still be for all I know, but he wasn't a great basketball player.
