Game of My Life: Kansas Jayhawks
Steve Buckner
DESCRIPTION
In his heart, Chris Piper felt confidently about playing the University of
Oklahoma Sooners a third time in 1988. Piper and the University of Kansas
Jayhawks had played the high-flying Sooners closely in a pair of eight-point
losses during Big Eight Conference play. Outwardly, however, Piper conveyed a
different image. A fan told Piper later he felt good about the game — for the
NCAA national championship — until he saw the senior forward from Lawrence look
quite nervous while walking to the bus before the game.
A few hours later on the night of April 4, 1988, Piper, the Jayhawks, and their
fans raucously celebrated the team’s first national title since 1952. This game
for the ages is one of 20 contests joyously recalled in Steve Buckner’s
Game of My Life: Kansas Jayhawks.
Chris Piper, owner and president of Grandstand Sportswear & Glassware, is a 1988 KU grad of the School of Business. Piper's starting position on KU's '88 NCAA Championship basketball team dubbed "Danny and the Miracles" gave him lots to talk about as he contributes as a basketball analyst for the Jayhawk Radio Network.
